Leif Garrett is one of the 12 guys to take the stage of American Idol!
The season comes into full swing tonight as we finally get a serious listen to the 12 men who made it through auditions and Hollywood week to be here tonight. So far, the talent I have seen this season is the best since Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard battled it out in Season 2, with Studdard coming out the victor.
It’s songs from the ’60s, the judges are seated, Ryan is standing by to introduce the contestants and Paula Abdul has already done one “seal clap;” let the show begin.
It’s Season 7, here’s how I heard it:
David Hernandez, 24, Glendale, Ariz.
David starts out with “In the Midnight Hour.” He starts slow and strong – his voice is full and clear. Then the beat picks up and he sings the heck out of the song, but his body only made almost imperceptible movements. The beginning of the song was outstanding – especially considering that it must be difficult to go first. His voice was a 9, his body language was a 6, over all, I give him an 8 out of 10.
Chikezie, 22, Inglewood, Calif.
The opposite of David, Chikezie starts “I Love You More Today” a little rough. He pulled through toward the middle and the end, but it wasn’t outstanding. He has a good voice, but it wasn’t as original as it needed to be. His voice is very throwback, so it suited the theme for the night. But, Chikezie is going to have to work a lot harder to stay with this year’s talent. To use a “Cowelism,” it was very “Love Boat.” Score: 6.
David Cook, 25, Blue Springs, Mo.
“So Happy Together,” sounded really good from David. He really brought this ’60’s tune up to date – something Chikezie failed to do. He brought a rock-n-roll vibe to it, was really comfortable on stage and is so far the best of the night. He needs the professional skills of the “American Idol” hair artists, but other than that, the song and the performance were great. 9.5
Jason Yeager, 28, Grand Prairie, Texas
Well, Jason hasn’t sung a note yet, but his story about doing this for his son brought a tear to my eye. “Moon River” is Jason’s choice and he has an outstanding voice for it. He also had the emotion to go with the lyrics – he sang the song like he knew what the words meant and he was working hard to convey the feelings of it to the audience. Geez, and after the son story, now he dedicates the song to his grandmother. I think he has a strong voice, and good emotion; he’ll do better with songs that aren’t so old so that he doesn’t appear so old himself. 8.
Robbie Carrico, 26, Melbourne, Fla.
Coming out of auditions, this guy was my favorite. I like his style, I like his look, I like his performance and I like his voice. He has all the components to win this thing. He turned “One is the Loneliest Number” into a current performance – he is up-to-date, he is now and he’ll get the votes. 9
David Archuleta, 17, Murray, Utah
“Shop Around,” is an upbeat ’60s tune that suited this young guy quite well. With a boy-next-door charm, he wrapped the audience right around his finger. He seems to be born to perform and sing – he sang with a maturity far beyond 17. He was bold and really performed to the audience like he’s been doing this for 20 years. And then Simon gives the kid a compliment to bring him to his knees – “best performance of the night by a comfortable margin.” The kid has charm and viewers will just eat him up. 9.5.
Danny Noriega, 18, Azuza, Cailf.
Starting out the Top 12 singing Elvis is risky at best. I mean, “Jailhouse Rock” is Elvis Pressley and, in reality, can you really ever do that song any better than it was originally done? Bad song choice by a kid who really has a good voice; it didn’t work for me at all. Danny should have chosen a slower song that would have shown off his voice, but he did perform well. He took over the stage and did not appear to be nervous at all. Still, Elvis, man … not good. 6.
Luke Menard, 29, Crawfordsville, Ind.
Looks-wise, this guy could be Hugh Jackman’s double. “Everybody’s Talkin’ at Me,” is a beautiful song, but Luke was a bit off key. He’s a good singer, and he will attract the female audience. Simon says he won’t be remembered – I say the girls won’t forget him. The end of the song showed his range, which is fantastic and that will keep him in the game. 7.
Colton Berry, 18, Staunton, Va.
Ok – the guy even admits it – he looks like Ellen Degeneres – a lot. So, Colton also chooses to sing an Elvis tune, “Suspicious Minds.” At least it’s not as signature an Elvis song as “Jailhouse Rock,” and Colton managed to bring a bit of himself to this famous tune. He’s obviously very comfortable on stage and he has a good voice – not the strongest voice of the lot, but good. Not completely memorable, but not totally forgettable, either. 7.
Garrett Haley, 17, Elida, Ohio
Garrett is a Leif Garrett/Peter Frampton combo – but in looks only. Garrett has an OK voice, it was a bit breathy, and he bought nothing new to “Breaking Up is Hard to Do.” It was, as Simon would say, very karaoke. It would have gone over fabulously in the local bar, but is this a recording artist? Not for me. He needed to make himself known in this song, and I know nothing more than I did a minute ago about who Garrett Haley is – except perhaps that he is a little boring. 5.
Jason Castro, 20, Rockwall, Texas
Jason is going to be the first contestant to perform on “American Idol” with an instrument. This is the first season this has been allowed and Jason is playing “Daydream” on the guitar. He reminds me strangely of David Cassidy with dreadlocks. His voice is good, but he appears nervous and he does not bring anything new to this classic song. But he’s got a current look and he’s got charm. Simon says he’s one of the top 2 performances of the night – I totally disagree, but it was good enough for him to try again next week. 7.5.
Michael Johns, 29, Buckhead, Ga.
He’s originally from Australia and retains the accent. He also chose a song in The Doors, “Light My Fire,” that totally suited his voice and his stage presence. Vocally he was spot on, and extremely entertaining, his version of that song could be on the radio tomorrow. He hit this one out of the park – best performance of the night for me and he is currently the man to beat. 10.
So, who’s going home? Hopefully David Hernandez won’t be forgotten for going first, because he wasn’t bottom 2. Deserving to leave are Chikezie, Danny Noriega, Colton Berry and Garrett Haley. Going home? It’s hard during the first round to know what America will do, but I think it’s goodbye for Danny Noriega and Garrett Haley.

Pastor Issues 30-Day Sex Challenge to Married Couples
Pastor Issues 30-Day Sex Challenge to Married Couples
If sex isn't in your schedule as much as you'd like, a Florida pastor is proposing a challenge.
"We're launching into our 30-day sex challenge. We wanted to be able to help couples both married and single to really refocus their sex lives around what God's principles are," says Paul Wirth, Pastor of "Relevant Church" in Ybor City, Florida.
Pastor Wirth says he came up with the idea because so many people have told him they have "no time for sex".
The paster says, married people should try to have sex for 30 days. A few people have already signed up for the "30-Day Sex Challenge".
Doug Webber says, "Between life, the house, the kids, the business, sometimes how this whole thing got started gets kind of forgotten. So that's what I'm most excited about it, I'm excited about that refocusing time for us."
But single people also have a challenge. The pastor says they have to abstain from sex. "We're asking the single people to take a break from sex, maybe take a sex detox for 30 days ... even if they've been together for years. Because maybe the sex for them has been the central theme of their relationship and maybe they're missing a part of it."
Jarrett Haas is single and has accepted the challenge. "I want to be able to say you know whenever I do find a wife one day, hey I did this for you when I was 26 years old."
Pastor Webber says while this challenge should re-kindle passion and affection in marriages, it will also teach singles to appreciate themselves and their partners without the sex.

'Snakehead-fish' that is deadlier than a piranha caught in Britain caused panic!
A savage fish deadlier than a piranha that has killed people has been caught on British shores for the first time.
The giant snakehead - so called because of its long body and fearsome teeth - was caught by an angler in Lincolnshire.
Dubbed the "gangster" of the fish world, it eats everything it comes across and has even been reported to kill people.
The monster, which is from south-east Asia, can also "crawl" on land and survive out of water for up to four days.
It already has a fearsome predatory reputation in other parts of the world.
In the U.S., the fish has been described as a "FrankenFish" and "like something out of a horror film".
Andy Alder, from Lincoln, caught a 2ft snakehead while using a sprat as bait for pike on the River Witham near North Hykeham.
He said: "It had a gob full of razor-sharp teeth. To be honest it looked terrifying."
Anglers and conservationists are panic-stricken after its discovery in Britain.
An Environment Agency source said: “The reaction was, 'Oh s***'. This is the ultimate invasive species — if it starts breeding here it's a disaster."
Ben Weir, of the fishing magazine Angler's Mail, said: "In all my time of working within fishing I have never heard so many concerned voices.
"These guys are the real deal and have attacked humans whilst protecting their young.
"Everyone within the angling and fishery world have been left gobsmacked by its capture."
Experts have examined pictures of the fish and confirmed it was the predator.
It is on a blacklist of species that cannot be imported into the UK.
There are fears it could have been smuggled in for an aquarium and then illegally released.
Catching the vicious fish is considered great sport in Asia.
One of the world's leading angling guides, Jean Francois-Helias of Angling Adventures Thailand, has put his customers onto brilliant snakehead captures.
He told Angler's Mail: "That fish is a juvenile giant snakehead, or channa micropeltes, the meanest of all snakehead species.
"That giant snakehead has no fear. It even attacks human beings when protecting its fry."
The same fish caused chaos when they made it into the U.S. in 2002.
Snipers were set up on river banks to shoot them and entire lakes were poisoned in a bid to wipe them out.
Adult snakeheads can grow to 3ft and weigh as much as 44lb.

Burn your body fat with Joy Fit Club’s 30-minute workout!
Try the Joy Fit Club’s 30-minute workout! Tone your muscles, increase your aerobic capacity and burn body fat.
Fitness expert Geralyn Coopersmith has created a 30-minute circuit training workout perfect for members of the Joy Fit Club or anyone looking to get in shape.
Circuit training is a great way to get a quick, effective total-body workout that never gets boring. The circuits you’ll be doing involve alternating power toning moves with cardio moves, so that in just 30 minutes you can tone your muscles, increase your aerobic capacity and burn body fat.
I’ve picked a series of lower body, upper body and core exercises to tone the largest muscle groups in the shortest amount of time. Because these muscles require a lot of total body effort, your heart rate will stay elevated during the entire workout — and you will burn more calories than with conventional resistance training.
Here are a few simple guidelines to keep in mind:
1. Commit to 30 minutes of exercise every day
2. You can do any of the following variations, but be careful not to do the same muscle groups on back-to-back days:
* cardio moves alone
* cardio with lower body only
* cardio with upper body only
* cardio with core only or cardio with upper, lower and core
*The exception to this are the core moves, which can (and should, if possible) be done every day.
Five cardio options
Works the cardiovascular system, improves aerobic capacity, burns calories and helps fat loss. The following are five cardio options
1. Straddle down on step (step move): Begin standing on top and in the middle of the step, standing “lengthwise” (i.e., as if you were standing on a diving board). Begin straddling off and on the step by stepping off with your right foot then off with your left, then back on with your right foot and on with your left. Continue doing the movement quickly while still maintaining good control and foot placement. To make the movement more intense, bend the knees and try to keep your body down closer to the step throughout.
2. Alternating knees up on step (step move): Step on the step with your right foot and then lift your left knee up as high as you can, keeping good posture. Immediately, step down with your left foot and down with your right. Then change step on with your left foot and lift your right knee. Continue so that you are alternating stepping and lifting knees each time.
3. Marching in place (floor move – no step): Stand tall with good posture. March in place lifting the feet up purposefully and pumping the arms rhythmically.
4. Alternating elbow to knee (floor move – no step): Stand tall with good posture. Bring your right knee toward your left elbow. Then switch and bring your left knee toward your right elbow. Continue alternating rhythmically. Try to keep your back as straight as possible throughout.
5. Alternating squat to front kick (floor move – no step): Standing with your feet a little wider than hip-width apart, sit back as if sitting into a chair. As you stand back up, kick out in front of you with your right leg. Immediately place your right leg down and go back into a squat. This time as you come up, kick forward with your left leg as you come up. Continue alternating squats with single-leg front kicks.

Let's Have Some Fun with Electric Football!
Let's Have Some Fun with Electric Football!
Back before Atari and Nintendo, when kids had to use their darn imaginations to play a game of football (we say while holding our canes outstretched), there was a game called vibrating (or "electric") football. All you older kids will be glad (or horrified) to learn that a company called Excalibur is bringing back the electric, buzzing table-top game, complete with an NFL license.
For you young'ns, electric football was originally created in 1947 when it was, clearly, one of the most high-tech games a kid could have. It was an electric game that consisted of a plug-in tin football field and a bunch of little football player figures. The vibration made the players move in all sorts of random directions, and the outstretched arms of the players made them "lock" in what we pretended was a tackle (though it looked more like a do-se-do). Yes, that's pretty much all it did. We got a chance to check it out at this year's Consumer Electronics Showcase and, yes, that's pretty much all it still does.
But we don't care. Low tech? Sure. In a world of polygons, real-time shading, and online Madden games, this is an exciting, refreshing kick in the pants, and we're psyched to see it make a return.

New York Sex Tape: Amy Fisher to promote sex tape with husband
NEW YORK (CNN) -- More than a decade after gaining notoriety as New York's "Long Island Lolita," Amy Fisher has settled with a Los Angeles, California, production company regarding the release and distribution of a sex tape featuring her and her husband.
"It does exist, people are looking at it, so I agreed to -- not endorse it -- but [I] will discuss it," Fisher said at a news conference Friday.
Under the terms of the settlement with the Red Light District production company, Fisher agreed to an undisclosed sum of money and a promotional appearance at a New York City nightclub.
She described how her husband, Louis Bellera, sold the sex tape during an acrimonious divorce, and she denied being involved in its initial release.
The couple has since reconciled.
"I love my husband and I've done a lot of things, too," Fisher said. "I know he's very sorry." Video Watch Fisher say she will hold her head high »
Fisher, 33, drew mass media attention as a teenager in 1992 when an affair with Joey Buttafuocco ended with her shooting his wife, leaving her paralyzed.

Fisher received a five- to 15-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to first degree assault for shooting Mary Jo Buttafuocco. She served seven years in a western New York prison.
Joey Buttafuocco, then a 38-year-old auto body shop owner, pleaded guilty to statutory rape and served six months in prison.

Marion Barber Goes Nuts as Giants-Cowboys Tied 14-14 at the Half
Marion Barber Goes Nuts as Giants-Cowboys Tied 14-14 at the Half
The Cowboys were 7.5 favorites heading into today's NFC Divisional game against the Giants, but at the half, it's 14-14. Of course, the Jaguars and Patriots were tied 14-14 at the half on Saturday, but New England ended up winning by 11 points, so it's too early to start crowing asses.
One of the concerns coming into this game was that Tony Romo would be suffering some sort of Jessica Simpson Love Hangover, but he was 8 of 14 for 83 yards and a touchdown. While those aren't eye-popping numbers, Romo avoided the mental mistakes that have plagued him the previous few games.
More impressive, Marion Barber, getting his first start of the season, punished the Giants defense to the tune of 101 yards on 16 carries and one score.
Terrell Owens seems as healthy as ever (four catches for 49 yards, one touchdown), and Terry Glenn, after four months, made his first catch of in 2007 season ... in 2008.
For the Giants, quarterback Eli Manning continues to look sharp (8 of 13, 130 yards, two touchdowns). Plaxico Burress has only one catch (he hobbled off the field late in the second quarter), but Amani Toomer had a 52-yard touchdown catch-and-run to put New York up 7-0.
Both teams are playing well, but if the Giants don't slow up Barber, he could be the difference in the second half.

World's largest and deepest hyperbaric chamber!
World's largest and deepest hyperbaric chamber!
The National Hyperbaric Centre in Scotland plans to build the world's largest and deepest test chamber according to divemagazine.co.uk.
The multi-million project at the Aberdeen-based centre will enable researchers to test underwater equipment to depths greater than 5,000m.
The new test chamber is expected to cost anything up to £10 million. It is the latest in a run of ambitious initiatives to celebrate National Hyperbaric Centre's 20th anniversary year.
'There may have been a perception at one time that the centre was just a bunch of dusty, rarely used diving chambers,' said National Hyperbaric Centre managing director David Smith. 'But the centre is about much, much more than that and we are shrugging off that image now, emerging as a sharp, dynamic commercial entity.'

Make city safer with surveillance cameras at red lights
Make city safer with surveillance cameras at red lights
This is something about public's safety and security in the city, read further below the article extracted from: http://www.al.com/opinion/press-register/index.ssf?/base/opinion/1200219397205490.xml&coll=3
Sunday, January 13, 2008
THIS YEAR, the Legislature should give red light cameras the green light.
In Mobile, the idea of installing cameras at dangerous intersections has been talked about since 1999. Mobile isn't the only city interested in taking pictures of vehicles running stoplights, but the obstacles are formidable.
Alabama's constitution does not give cities the authority to enact local ordinances, according to an attorney general's opinion that the Mobile City Council sought in 1999: "A city may enact ordinances only within the authority specifically granted to it by the Legislature."
So even though city administrations have wanted the cameras and even though a Press-Register/University of South Alabama poll in 2006 found overwhelming citizen support for the idea, state legislation is required.
Of course, this is a prime example of why Alabama so badly needs a new constitution that concentrates less power in the Legislature and more power in the municipalities and counties where local people are perfectly capable of making their own decisions.
In the meantime, red-light cameras have been stopped whenever a lawmaker has tried to push a bill through the Legislature. Last year, a bill that would have allowed Mobile to install the cameras did not even get out of the local delegation, a casualty of feuding among local legislators over unrelated bills.
Let us hope that members of the local delegation resolve their differences before the next session opens in Montgomery. They should remember that they are supposed to be serving their constituents, not special interests, and that as a group they can accomplish more for the Mobile area than they can acting alone.
It would help if the legislators could focus on solving the problem, which is that people run traffic lights in Mobile and cause accidents. In the 2006 poll, 92 percent of the respondents said running red lights in the city was a problem.
Indeed, as far back as 1999, City Councilman Clinton Johnson became a supporter of the cameras after he and his son were involved in an accident he said was caused by the other driver running a red light.
Insurance company studies repeatedly have shown that Mobile has some of the most dangerous intersections in the state. Accidents not only kill and injure people; they drive up insurance costs.
Police officers can be more effective patrolling the city and answering calls instead of sitting at an intersection waiting for someone to run a red light.
Surveillance cameras at intersections are a controversial topic nationwide, and there are legal issues to work through. Last year the Minnesota Supreme Court struck down use of the cameras in Minneapolis, saying that it conflicted with a law requiring uniform traffic laws statewide. The court also said the law shifted the burden of proof of innocence to the owner of the vehicle, who gets the citation regardless of who was driving.
There have also been questions about invasion of privacy, but the Press-Register editorial board sees no difference between surveillance cameras at intersections and surveillance cameras in the downtown entertainment district or in the Wallace Tunnel.
Indeed, these days one's car can be viewed by half the city on the 6 o'clock TV news traffic report.
The legal issues do need careful attention in structuring any state legislation or local criminal laws and civil ordinances. But state and city governments generally have enough attorneys on staff to come up with the proper legal language to withstand a court challenge.
There is more traffic in Mobile since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the growing economy and large numbers of new jobs coming to the area will increase traffic even more.
Cameras taking photos of people running red lights are a well-justified public safety measure.

2008 Disney Half Marathon
Disney Half Marathon becomes unusual sprint to the finish! The top-2 finishers in the men's event are separated by just over one second.
Usually 13.1-mile races don't come down to the last 100 yards, but that's exactly what happened when Chad Johnson edged out his teammate and friend Fred Joslyn at the 2008 Disney Half Marathon on Saturday morning.
Johnson won the overall title at the event with a time of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 53 seconds, just over a second faster than Joslyn.
"All of a sudden we turned the corner and the finish line was right in front of us," Johnson said. "I think we both had a pretty good kick at that point."
It was the first-ever trip for Johnson, who lives in Rochester, Mich., to compete in the half marathon, and he wasn't disappointed.
"The scenery along the course was great," he said. "I really enjoyed it."
For the women, it was a familiar face taking home the half marathon prize, as previous two-time champion Kim Pawelek of Jacksonville won in a time of 1:18:07.
Pawelek, 33, said it's always great to win a race in her home state.
"Even though it's only two-and-a-half hours away, this is an awesome experience," she said. "It really is a big deal to come down here and compete, and win."
The top local for the men was Hunter Kemper, 31, of Longwood. Kemper's time of 1:08:28 was good enough for fourth place overall. On the women's side, Melissa Corp, 48, of Longwood, took 35th place with a time of 1:39:41.
According to race supervisors, more than 16,500 athletes competed in Saturday's race. Over 18,000 are expected to run in today's full marathon.
Both Johnson and Pawelek said they would pass on competing on back-to-back days, but more than 3,000 competitors who finished the half marathon are planning to take on that challenge.
The 2008 Disney Marathon Weekend concludes today with the main event, the Disney Marathon. The race is scheduled to start at 5:55 a.m. in front of the Epcot theme park.
